This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
