Nigeria's stunning new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has ended up in the center of area political conflicts during the period it was expected to – but failed – to begin operations to the general public for the first time.

Mowaa, a non-profit national foundation, aims at generating over 30,000 employment opportunities and contributing more than $80m annually to the regional creative economy through collaborations and events.

Funding Sources and Political Challenges

It has taken $25m to achieve this stage – money gathered from different supporters, featuring the European governments, the British Museum and the Edo state government.

But now the local government has revoked permission from beneath it – terminating the utilization of the site on which the building was erected.

An government communicator clarified this was because in the early agreements it had identified as the Edo-named institution – and it had later eliminated "the regional name" from its name.

The demonstrators on the weekend, for instance, were calling for that the institution be put under the control of the royal leader.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This brings into focus the contentious issue of the historical artworks, one of the continent's most renowned artistic heritage.

Because though the institution does eventually open, these artifacts will be conspicuously absent.

They are brass, elephant tusk and timber sculptures that once adorned the king's residence of the historical empire before British soldiers took them in 1897 during a punitive expedition.

Currently, many remain spread across museums in Western nations -- featuring the UK institution, Berlin's Humboldt Forum and the American museum.

Return Initiatives

Their return has become one of the most contested discussions in the international art community. Approximately 150 have presently made their way home – and additional are scheduled to be repatriated.
