Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
