The former US president’s newest warning to impose an additional 100% tariff on items imported from China has been labeled a “typical example” of US double standards, according to the Beijing administration.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that China could enact its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the US President executes his pledge, adding that the country was “unafraid” of a possible trade war.

Last Friday, Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to reinforce its policies for overseas sales of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.

He also warned to pull out of a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a meeting in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

Trump’s comments on that day shook global markets, with the S&P 500 closing down 2.7%, marking its biggest drop since last spring.

These statements revived concerns of a trade conflict between the US and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the economic powers.

Consequently, American import duties on Chinese goods subject to an extra thirty percent tariff compared with the year’s onset, while American products entering the Chinese market face a import levy.

China’s latest remarks – released by the relevant government department in the manner of formal replies to media inquiries – mirrored language from the zenith of the ongoing trade dispute.

The remarks condemned American limits on exports on chips and semi-conductors while defending the country’s own export controls on key elements as “standard procedures” to ensure domestic safety and that of every country.

The official stated that for “an extended period”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, abused overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” biased policies against China.

“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to interact with Beijing,” the spokesperson commented.

“The nation’s view” on a import duty dispute has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Last week, China declared it was tightening overseas sale regulations on key elements and additional substances critical for high-technology production.

This was seen as a significant step, as the state handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in items such as solar panels and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being seen by some as a method of strengthening positions prior to forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between Trump and China’s leader, planned at a high-level meeting in South Korea later this month, will go ahead.
